Stacey J Nelson Ph.D. and Surry's Talk of The Town Is Tweedle
a Registered Pet Therapy Team
Dr Stacey J Nelson, a Family Therapist, Motivational Trainer, and Consultant, in Boca Raton Florida
has been baking and cooking for humans and for her dogs for many years. Considering her dogs are
like her children, their special dietary needs and health conditions are lovingly monitored and adhered to.
Her interest in healthy food has been a hobby for years and includes spending time reading labels for
her diet, as well as for Tweedle's. (her Yellow Labrador Retriever) During the pet food recall horror, a
few years ago, Dr Nelson counseled patient's trying to cope with their situational grief, loss and
bereavement. The cause of their sadness was due to the suffering of their beloved animals ,and the loss
of their ongoing companionship. Hearing these horror stories and learning about these pet food recalls,
amazed her to find out about toxic chemicals put into dog and cat food (melamine, etc.).This unusual
phenomena greatly alarmed her, and she decided to do something about it, so she started experimenting
with different recipes for Tweedle, until she decided on which recipes Tweedle liked best. Shortly around t
he time of the pet food recalls, she unexpectedly discovered Tweedle had food allergies, and allergies to i
nsecticide and grass fertilizer. To make matters worse, she also found out Tweedle had inherited a congenital
heart problem called, Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia.
Thank goodness her condition is mild to moderate, and may never develop congestive heart failure. Scary as
these health conditions sounded, she contacted the best Cardiologists, and Veterinary Specialists to treat her
Labrador. Determined to keep Tweedle as healthy as possible, she learned Tweedle could not exert herself by
getting too much exercise, and learned about what foods and substances Tweedle was allergic to, to eliminate
them from her diet. Like mother, like daughter, dealing with and managing allergies was not new, since Mom
Stacey has had allergies since childhood. Dr Nelson was startled to learn how many artificial chemicals and
other unhealthy ingredients were in dog and cat foods, so she started creating recipes for snacks and training
treats used as a reward, using no wheat, soy, corn, added salt and sugar, Gluten free, no animal by-products
or hormones. She used natural fresh chicken breast, thighs and legs and chicken liver, purchased at local
markets, and substituted wheat flour for organic brown rice flour, etc. During the summer of 2008, these
homebaked treats and rewards were used in Tweedle's obedience training classes to help motivate Tweedle's
performance. Many of Tweedle's classmates were curious about what Stacey had in her pockets, since the
aroma of her treats was very enticing. She handed out samples during training to Tweedle's classmates, and
they were a big hit! Tweedle's fellow dog students asked for more and more in the middle of class! Since the
treats were developed for Tweedle, they became known as Tweedle Bites, Tweedle Stix, Tweedle Nips, and
Tweedle Bones. Soon after Tweedle's Doodah Cookies, Tweedle's Mini-icepops, and mini-pupcakes and birthday
cakes were developed. An animal feed laboratory was hired to conduct tests known as a Guaranteed Analysis
of minerals, nutrients, Crude Protein, Crude Fat, Crude Fiber, Moisture, and Ash. The results turned out to be
quite impressive. A corporation was formed in October 2008 and is now known as "Tweedle Pet Products,"
named after you know who.... Many people asked if we had treats for cats or birds, and she said:" we will
eventually develop them in the near future." In the past year, we developed treats for cats and for exotic birds
and also recently expanded our business, due to popular demand, to include Gluten Free cookies and treats for
people. So many of our pet owners could not resist tasting our doggie cookies, and no matter where a Tweedle
Pet Products Demo was scheduled, "Humans" consistently tasted our dog treats. Now our customers also include
people cookies..and treats! Some of our cookies and treats are Carob Chip cookies, and Banana Bread, which
contain low fat and low sugars..some of our other cookies for humans contain chocolate, but are not shared with
dogs, because chocolate is toxic to dogs. Dr Nelson loves chocolate, so she could not resist including chocolate .
In the past there was fear about Peanut Butter, but the organic peanut butter she uses is bottled and sold from
a local health food market, and is not related to the peanut butter mentioned in the news, causing health problems.
Her recipes for Tweedle's new flavors for bites, and nips include freshly picked fruit from her Mango trees.
"Mango Mommie Please", and Sweet Potato are 99% grain free. She also developed a 100% Grain Free line of
treats - these are known as Tweedle's Doodah Cookies, and Tweedle Stix Natural Chews. The first 2 flavors are
Sweet Potato, low fat content, and very rich in anti-oxidents, the other flavor is 100% Grain Free all Beef Liver,
with the protein content in this treat totaling 70.2%.
An avid gardner, growing many of her own fruits, vegetables, and herbs, Dr Nelson is committed to creating the
highest quality human grade natural dog snacks, and training treats not only for her yellow Labrador Retriever
Tweedle, but for other dogs. and of course for herself to enjoy..
In the very near future, Dr Nelson plans to open up "Tweedles" a Bakery and Boutique for you and your pet.

by Dr Meg Sleeper, VMD, DACVIM (Cardiology) and Dr. Paula Henthorn (Ph.D. Genetics)
GOAL OF RESEARCH: - To find the Genetic Marker causing Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia (TVD),
a congenital heart defect and disease, and develop a blood test to detect this illness, similar to the
Optigen Test which rules out Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and other eye diseases.
